Some users don\u2019t know they can permanently change these settings, so they continue to reset them for each new document or just struggle along. Users should consider resetting the following defaults to work more productively. Of course, there are more defaults to set.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1: Line spacing<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The default line spacing setting in <a title=\"Word Defaults\" href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-us\/training\/CR010065456.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Word 2007<\/a> and 2010 is 1.15, not 1, as it is in 2003. Microsoft believes 1.15 is more readable online. You can do so quickly enough by pressing [Ctrl]+Z, but that becomes tedious after a while and you might forget. If you use straight quotes more than smart quotes, disable smart quotes as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the File menu and choose Options under Help. In Word 2007, click the Office button and click Word Options. If you\u2019re pasting from foreign sources, you probably reformat it once it\u2019s in your Word document. If you do this a lot, change the Paste Special default as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the File tab and choose Options. From the Tools menu, choose Options, and click the Edit tab. If you find yourself resetting the save location a lot, reset the default as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the File tab and choose Options. In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click the Word Options button. In Word 2003, choose Options from the Tools menu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Select Save in the left pane. In Word 2003, click the File Locations tab.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Specify the new folder in the Default File Location field shown in\u00a0<strong>Figure E<\/strong>. Or click Browse and locate it that way. In Word 2003, highlight the Documents item and click Modify. This extra space isn\u2019t the same as a blank line, so you can\u2019t delete it by pressing Backspace. To eliminate this extra spacing, do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the Home tab. In Word 2003, select Paragraph from the Format menu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the Paragraph group\u2019s dialog launcher (the small arrow in the lower-right corner). Even though it\u2019s dimmed, it still annoys some users. You can press [Esc] to hide it or you can permanently disable it, as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the File menu and choose Options. In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Choose General in the left pane (if necessary).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the User Interface Options section, uncheck the Show Mini Toolbar On Selection option, shown in\u00a0<strong>Figure G<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click OK.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Figure G<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a title=\"Word Defaults\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sjtechies.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1955\" title=\"Word Default\" src=\"http:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD7.jpg 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD7-300x83.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Uncheck this option to disable the mini toolbar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>7: Drawing canvas<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Word\u2019s drawing canvas is a distinct layer for drawing. Objects placed in a canvas have an absolute position and remain together as a group. Most users find the canvas layer difficult to work with and frankly, most users don\u2019t need it. If you\u2019re still using Word 2003, disable the canvas layer as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From the Tools menu, choose Options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the General tab.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Uncheck Automatically Create Drawing Canvas When Inserting AutoShapes in the General Options section.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click OK.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Word 2007 and 2010 disables the canvas layer by default. If you happen to be working with the drawing canvas enabled, disable it as follows:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the File menu and then choose Options. In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the left pane, choose Advanced.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the Editing section, uncheck the Automatically Create Drawing Canvas When Inserting AutoShapes option, shown in\u00a0<strong>Figure H<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click OK.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<h4>Figure H<\/h4>\n<p><a title=\"Word Defaults\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sjtechies.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1962\" title=\"Word Default\" src=\"http:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD8.jpg 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD8-300x115.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The drawing canvas is annoying enough that Microsoft finally disabled it by default in the Ribbon versions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>8: Normal.dotx<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Word bases new documents on Normal.dotx, but the template\u2019s settings might not fit your needs. If you have just a few changes, customize Normal.dotx. A common customization is to change the font and size. To make the change at the template level, do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Open a new document and click the Home tab.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the Font group\u2019s dialog launcher (the arrow in the bottom-right corner). In Word 2003, choose Font from the Format menu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Make the necessary font changes. For instance, you might choose Arial, 12.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before closing the dialog, click the Set As Default button. In Word 2003, click Default.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the resulting confirmation dialog, select the option to set the default for all documents based on the Normal template, as shown in\u00a0<strong>Figure I<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click OK twice.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Figure I<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a title=\"Word Defaults\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sjtechies.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1966\" title=\"Word Defaults\" src=\"http:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD91.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Make a font change at the template level.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Other template customizations you might want to make include margins and styles. Use a custom template, rather than Normal.dotx, to meet requirements that are more complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>9: Word selection<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When you select part of a word and then part of the next, Word selects the whole word for you \u2014 whether you meant to or not. To disable this selection option, do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the File tab and choose Options. In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options. In Word 2003, choose Options from the Tools menu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Choose Advanced in the left pane. In Word 2003, click the Edit tab.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the Editing Options section, deselect the When Selecting, Automatically Select Entire Word option, as shown in\u00a0<strong>Figure J<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click OK.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Figure J<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a title=\"Word Defaults\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sjtechies.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1972\" title=\"Word Defaults\" src=\"http:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD10.jpg 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WD10-300x112.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ridding yourself of this annoying selection behavior is easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>10: Spelling, grammar, and formatting<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Word identifies misspelled words, grammatical errors, and formatting inconsistencies, as you type:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A red line indicates a word not found in the dictionary (possibly misspelled).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A green line indicates a possible grammatical error.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A wavy blue line indicates an inconsistent format.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p>I recommend that you get used to the display and not disable these features<a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 they\u2019re a helpful indication that something might be wrong. On the other hand, if you find them distracting, you\u00a0<em>can<\/em>disable them. To disable the red and green lines, do the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click the File tab and then choose Options. In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options. In Word 2003, choose Options from the Tools menu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Select Proofing in the left pane.
