If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, you only have until July 29, 2016 to do so. And most people should! Windows 10 is the best Windows yet, chock full of handy new features, sleek under-the-hood improvements, andheadache-killing extras.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not for everybody. There are some very real, very valid reasons not to upgrade to Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re on the fence about whether to accept or reject Microsoft\u2019s freebie, read on for some concrete justifications for staying put.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10114\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-media-center.png\" alt=\"windows-media-center\" width=\"572\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-media-center.png 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-media-center-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>No Windows Media Center or DVD support<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>Before we dig into the meatier stuff, let\u2019s take a look at what you\u2019ll potentially give up if you upgrade to Windows 10, starting with some robust media playback options.<\/p>\n<p>Windows 10 kills Windows Media Center off completely, after Windows 8 pushed it into a dark corner. There\u2019s a reason for that: Windows Media Center is fairly niche, and not a lot of people use it. But if you do, you won\u2019t want to upgrade to Windows 10 unless you\u2019re prepared to dive into alternatives like Kodi,\u00a0Plex, and DVR workarounds.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and if you\u2019re on Windows 7, be aware that Windows 10 doesn\u2019t offer native DVD playback, though there are no-cost alternatives you can use.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10115\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-gadgets.jpg\" alt=\"windows-gadgets\" width=\"569\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-gadgets.jpg 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-gadgets-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 569px) 100vw, 569px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>No desktop gadgets or widgets<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>Likewise, if you\u2019re a big fan of Windows 7\u2019s gadgets and widgets for the desktop, they aren\u2019t available in Windows 10. Which is good, because\u00a0they\u2019re horribly insecure. Whether you choose to stay on Windows 7 or upgrade to Windows 10, you\u2019d probably be better off using Rainmeter\u2019s seriously slick interactive desktop software.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10116\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/onedrive.jpg\" alt=\"onedrive\" width=\"565\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/onedrive.jpg 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/onedrive-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>No OneDrive placeholders<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>Windows 8.1 offered a handy feature for hardcore OneDrive users: placeholders. Placeholders showed everything stored in your OneDrive account in the Windows 8.1 file system, but only downloaded files to your PC when you opened them. It was a wonderful way to stay on top of your cloud-stored files without downloading all of them to every Windows device you logged into with your Microsoft account, especially if you\u2019ve stashed dozens of gigabytes&#8217; worth of stuff into OneDrive.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, users found it confusing, and Microsoft ripped placeholders out of Windows 10. There are hints that a similar feature may make an appearance someday, but it hasn\u2019t yet, so if placeholders are a must-have feature for you, you\u2019ll want to avoid upgrading to Windows 10. The new operating system\u2019s less granular selective sync options just aren\u2019t the same.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10117\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-updates-1024x625.png\" alt=\"windows-10-updates\" width=\"595\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-updates-1024x625.png 1024w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-updates-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-updates-768x469.png 768w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-updates.png 1187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>No control over Windows Updates<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>Aaaaaand here\u2019s the biggie. Windows 10 utterly eradicates the ability to manually control your system updates. Windows 10 Pro will let you defer updates for a few months, but that\u2019s the extent of it. If Microsoft pushes out an update, your system <em>will<\/em>install it eventually (though identifying your Wi-Fi connection as \u201cmetered\u201d lets youchoose <em>when<\/em> updates download, at least).<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t a big deal for people who stuck with Windows 7 and 8\u2019s default Windows Update options, which downloaded patches automatically. But if you like to control your own update destiny, this could be a showstopper.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10118\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/privacy.jpg\" alt=\"privacy\" width=\"573\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/privacy.jpg 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/privacy-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>Privacy concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>That segues nicely into another controversial Windows 10 \u201cfeature.\u201d Microsoft\u2019s new operating system tracks you far more closely than previous versions of Windows, especially if you use the express settings during the initial setup. The search bar utilizes Cortana, Windows 10\u2019s digital assistant, and sends all your queries to Microsoft servers. Your Windows Store app usage is tracked for ad targeting. Windows 10 tracks your typing, location, Edge browser behavior, program installations and more.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a lot. To be fair, a lot of the concern roaring around this is overblown; most of Windows 10\u2019s potential privacy concerns can be disabled. But there\u2019s no way to turn off some of the telemetry data Windows 10 collects about your system and beams back to the mothership. Microsoft executives don\u2019t consider this a privacy issue. If you do, Windows 10 isn\u2019t for you.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10119\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/get-office-windows-10-pop-up.png\" alt=\"get-office-windows-10-pop-up\" width=\"575\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/get-office-windows-10-pop-up.png 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/get-office-windows-10-pop-up-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>Ads and more ads<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>Windows 10 doesn\u2019t only track your Windows Store app usage for improved ad targeting; it frequently pushes ads of its own at you. By default, you\u2019ll see pop-up notification ads imploring you to get Skype or Office (even if you <em>have<\/em> Office), ads for suggested Windows Store apps slipped into your Start menu, and even occasional full-screen lockscreen ads for high-profile Windows Store releases.<\/p>\n<p>I loathe the idea that my paid-for operating system\u2014and yes, Windows 10 isn\u2019t <em>truly <\/em>free\u2014is pushing ads in my face. Fortunately, all of the offenders can be disabled. But doing so requires diving into arcane system settings located in different far-flung corners of the operating system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ss-nav-2\" class=\"slideshow-bottom-nav\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10120\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-full-screen-prompt-1024x562.png\" alt=\"windows-10-full-screen-prompt\" width=\"594\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-full-screen-prompt-1024x562.png 1024w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-full-screen-prompt-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-full-screen-prompt-768x421.png 768w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-full-screen-prompt.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideshow-bottom-nav\">\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>Microsoft&#8217;s aggressive upgrade tactics<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s been acting pretty shady in its aggressive quest to push Windows 7 and 8 users to Windows 10, employing unstoppable pop-ups, malware-like tactics, forced upgrades, intrusive full-screen takeovers, and nasty tricks to coax\u2014and sometimes outright <em>deceive<\/em>\u2014people into adopting the new OS. It eventually became so heavy-handed that some users have disabled Windows Updates entirely rather than suffer the barrage.<\/p>\n<p>But you know that. If you\u2019re still considering upgrading to Windows 10, you\u2019ve lived through it.<\/p>\n<p>None of that detracts from Windows 10\u2019s underlying awesomeness. But it may have detracted from your desire to upgrade to Windows 10\u2014and rightfully so. If you\u2019re unhappy with Microsoft\u2019s ethics and tactics in handling Windows 10 upgrades, you\u2019re well within your rights to stay put where you\u2019re at.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10121\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-xp-mode-windows-7-1024x774.jpg\" alt=\"windows-xp-mode-windows-7\" width=\"497\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-xp-mode-windows-7-1024x774.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-xp-mode-windows-7-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-xp-mode-windows-7-768x580.jpg 768w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-xp-mode-windows-7.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>Software compatibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>In the wake of those forced upgrades, dozens and dozens of readers reached out to me with tales of woe, many revolving around software that simply doesn\u2019t work with Windows 10. As my colleague Glenn Fleishman recently pointed out at Macworld, old software isn\u2019t inherently bad software\u2014but some of it won\u2019t work in Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p>If you rely on particular pieces of software, do a quick Google search to make sure they\u2019ll work in Windows 10 <em>before<\/em> you upgrade. Office 2003\u2014the last pre-Ribbon UI Office\u2014isn\u2019t compatible, for instance, nor is software that requires the use of Windows 7\u2019s \u201cXP Mode\u201d compatibility, which isn\u2019t available in Windows 10. Microsoft\u2019s upgrade advisor is supposed to let you know if any software won\u2019t work with Windows 10, but users report that it isn\u2019t very reliable. Doing some homework now could save you some big headaches in the future.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10122\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/printers.png\" alt=\"printers\" width=\"595\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/printers.png 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/printers-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>Hardware compatibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>Similarly, you\u2019ll want to make sure Windows 10 works with your PC, too. No matter whether you\u2019re running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, I\u2019d recommend running Microsoft\u2019s hardware compatibility tool to scan your system. To do so, open the Get Windows 10 app\u2014the taskbar icon that\u2019s been tossing out all the upgrade pop-ups\u2014and click on the compatibility report option.<\/p>\n<p>But wait! That\u2019s not all. The tool only checks your core PC reliably. Some people who upgrade to Windows 10 discover that their hardware peripherals won\u2019t work, particularly older printers and scanners. If you have any aging peripherals connected to your PC, be it a printer or a beloved keyboard, I\u2019d again suggest conducting some quick Google searches to ensure your gear won\u2019t become paperweights if you decide to upgrade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ss-nav-2\" class=\"slideshow-bottom-nav\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10123\" src=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-samsung-laptop.jpg\" alt=\"windows-10-samsung-laptop\" width=\"574\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-samsung-laptop.jpg 400w, https:\/\/southjerseytechies.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/windows-10-samsung-laptop-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideshow-bottom-nav\">\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>Ain&#8217;t broke, don&#8217;t fix it<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>This final reason applies more to people who resist change or aren\u2019t very technically savvy. Yes, Windows 10 is stellar and absolved Windows 8\u2019s worst sins. Getting used to the new operating system shouldn\u2019t be too difficult for many PC users\u2014but the transition isn\u2019t entirely seamless. From Cortana to the introduction of the Edge browser to the radically new-look Start menu, and Windows 10&#8217;s evolution into being a more cloud-centric operating system, there are some big changes you\u2019ll need to wrap your head around.<\/p>\n<p>Do Windows 10\u2019s new features and under-the-hood improvements make upgrading worthwhile? I think so. But if you aren\u2019t comfortable dealing with changes on your computer, you might want to stay put.
